What Is a Cataract?

illustration of cataractsYour eye is covered by a transparent lens that refracts light and focuses it to allow you to see. As we age, the lens sometimes becomes clouded by proteins, preventing light from passing through. Vision becomes foggy or blurry and, if left untreated, is eventually completely obscured. Cataracts can develop in one eye or both, and they may develop at different rates.

Most cataracts begin developing around age 40, though symptoms often go undetected until age 60 or later. The protein buildup happens when the tissue of your lens begins changing. Typically this is prompted by aging, though an injury such as a splinter, chemical irritation, or eye trauma can cause a cataract to form as well. Diseases such as diabetes and even steroids used to treat autoimmune issues can also lead to cataract development.

Cataract symptoms are hard to detect at first, which makes regular eye exams essential as the eye doctor may notice signs before you do. Noticeable symptoms of a cataract include:

  • Cloudy, blurry, or dim eyesight
  • Worsening night vision
  • Lights and glare sensitivity
  • Needing brighter lights for reading and visual tasks
  • A "halo" effect around lights
  • Frequent changes to corrective prescriptions
  • Fading or yellowing of colors
  • Double vision in one eye

Be sure to contact our office and schedule an eye exam if you notice any of these signs. A cataract can be treated at any stage, but the earlier it’s detected, the easier and more effective treatment will be.

What Is the Treatment for Cataracts?

Thanks to modern technology, we can offer effective and permanent cataract treatment to Ontario patients. In the early stages, when vision changes are minor, a prescription lens may be enough to address eyesight issues caused by a cataract. Once the cataract becomes visible and the effect on vision is more pronounced, surgical treatment is the recommended course.

Using precise laser surgery, we can remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial prescription lens, similar to a contact. The new lens becomes a permanent part of your eye, and depending on whether you had a prior prescription, your eyesight may even be improved after the procedure.

Our Ontario Cataract Treatment Process

As with most advanced eye treatments, the process for addressing cataracts is divided into three stages. Here’s what you can expect when you visit Global LASIK & Cataract Institute for cataract care.

Evaluation

We provide free evaluations for cataracts, regardless of whether you have vision insurance. The eye surgeon will perform extensive tests to verify whether your vision issues are due to a cataract or a separate health concern. Your treatment may be covered by insurance; if not, we provide several financing options to help you receive the quality care you need.

Once a cataract has been confirmed, we’ll discuss your options and develop a personalized plan. If you have certain health complications, such as diabetes or a heart condition, we’ll work closely with your physician in the planning stage to ensure your care is both effective and safe.

Your procedure will take place at our surgery center. For your comfort and convenience, we have a driver ready to take you from our Ontario office directly to the other facility. We schedule a two-hour appointment window so that you have ample time to ask questions and relax before your treatment, and you will never feel rushed.

The actual procedure is short, typically taking only ten minutes to complete. If you have cataracts in both eyes, we will treat one eye during your first visit and schedule a second appointment two weeks later for the second eye.

Our staff are highly involved in your aftercare and ensure your treatment produces optimal results. We schedule a follow-up for the day after your procedure so the eye surgeon can see how your healing is progressing. Later follow-ups are scheduled for two weeks, one month, and three months after your procedure.

We strive to be available to you for whatever you need. If you experience any concerns or discomfort after your procedure, you can reach out to us on our 24-hour emergency number. Our staff will happily answer any questions and schedule extra follow-ups as needed.
